After returning recently from a visit to the US, I was keen on finding out what South African retailers felt about Self Checkout.

South Africa is a hybrid between first world and the under-developed third world.

It was clear according to the businesses that were approached that the concept was not impossible to conceive in environment.

If the self checkout lanes were overtly monitored by surveillance cameras, typical bad guys would find it easier to shoplift from the trading floor than to cheat under extreme surveillance situations.

Clearly such an exercise needs to be tested to assess how viable the proposal is for the South African supermarkets and possibly even filling stations.

Due to the high post apartheid crime rate the public is immediately skeptical of any scheme that appears to be based on trust. One needs to educate them into accepting the fact that there is no more trust in this case than is commonly found in daily life.

The largest Independent retailer in South Africa "The Checkout Group" have undertaken a watershed study on the viability of such a project.

We at CAD (http://www.cad.co.za) are watching the development of this project keenly as it will influence the possible future of Point of Sale Systems in South and Southern Africa.
